Faculty Overview

The Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics has a long-standing history of establishment and development closely associated with major milestones in the history of the University of Science, VNU-HCM.

History and Development

In 1941, the College of Sciences under the University of Indochina was established in Hanoi, laying the foundations for the development of natural sciences education in Vietnam, including Physics. By 1947, science education had expanded to Saigon, laying the groundwork for the development of a center for natural sciences education and research in southern Vietnam.

The year 1953 marked an important milestone when the College of Sciences was renamed the Faculty of Sciences, and the Division of Physics was established with a 615 m² laboratory and a curriculum delivered entirely in Vietnamese. This represented a significant step in establishing the foundations for Physics education and research, while also contributing to the development of generations of educators and scientists who have continued to advance the discipline over the years.

In 1976, following national reunification and the restructuring of the higher education system, the University of Sciences was merged with the University of Letters to establish the University of Ho Chi Minh City. Following this milestone, the Faculty of Physics was formally established, marking the beginning of a new period of stronger development in education, research, and academic staff development.

In 1996, the University of Science, VNU-HCM was established through the reorganization of the University of Ho Chi Minh City. The Faculty of Physics continued to serve as one of the University's foundational academic units, playing an important role in educating highly qualified scientific professionals and conducting research in both fundamental and applied sciences.

Over the course of its development, the Faculty has progressively expanded its research and academic programs, strengthened connections between fundamental Physics and interdisciplinary fields, engineering, and technology, and responded to the increasingly demanding requirements of modern science.

In 2010, the Faculty officially adopted its current name, the Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics. This milestone marked a new stage in its academic development, expanding its focus from its established strengths in fundamental Physics to include Engineering Physics, technology, and applied research. This transition was also aligned with the University's strategic direction of promoting interdisciplinary education, applied research, and stronger integration between science and technology.

Academic Foundations and Faculty

Over successive generations, the Faculty has steadily developed a strong academic and professional foundation. Today, the Faculty comprises 08 departments: Solid State Physics, Physics and Electronic Engineering, Nuclear Physics – Nuclear Engineering – Medical Physics, Theoretical Physics, Physics and Computer Science, Geophysics, Applied Physics, and Oceanology, Meteorology and Hydrology 

The Faculty currently has more than 100 academic and professional staff, including 01 Professor, 10 Associate Professors, 40 PhD holders, and 34 Master's degree holders, who contribute to teaching and research across a broad range of areas in Physics, Engineering Physics, and related scientific disciplines.

The Faculty currently offers 06 undergraduate programs, 08 master's programs, and 07 doctoral programs. Notably, 05 out of 06 undergraduate programs have received international accreditation from ASIIN, demonstrating the Faculty's and the University's commitment to continuously enhancing educational quality in accordance with international standards.

Research and Collaboration

Research activities at the Faculty cover a wide range of areas, from fundamental Physics and applied Physics to Engineering Physics and interdisciplinary research. The Faculty has undertaken numerous research projects funded by ministries and provincial departments, VNU-HCM, and the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED). Faculty members have also published research articles in international journals indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, in addition to contributing research findings to national and international scientific conferences.

Alongside education and research, the Faculty actively promotes collaboration with enterprises, research institutes, universities, and scientific organizations both in Vietnam and internationally. The Faculty has established academic and research partnerships with institutions and organizations from the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and other countries and territories. These collaborations have expanded opportunities for academic exchange, research cooperation, education and training, and the application of science and technology.

Building on its long-standing academic traditions and existing strengths, the Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics continues to pursue strategic priorities in enhancing educational quality, advancing scientific research, developing academic staff, promoting innovation, and expanding domestic and international collaboration.

With a development model built on the close integration of education – research – application, the Faculty aims to foster a dynamic academic environment where knowledge of Physics is connected with advances in science and technology, innovative ideas are encouraged and nurtured, and successive generations of students are equipped with a strong academic foundation, scientific thinking, and creative capabilities to contribute to the advancement of science, technology, and society.
