    1. Brief description of the modules

This course introduces the fundamental knowledge of mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of solids, with the following basic content:

The mechanics section provides students with a detailed and in-depth understanding of the fundamental concepts introduced in general physics courses. It also introduces new concepts and methods for detecting defects in solid materials. Defects in solids include point defects, line defects, and volume defects.

The thermal physics section provides students with knowledge about the thermal vibrations of atoms in solid crystal lattices. Students are required to master the theory of constant-volume heat capacity of solids.

The optics section equips students with specialized knowledge in the optics of semiconductor, metallic, and dielectric materials. The content includes: band structure of materials; band structure of metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics; electron and hole concentrations under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions; luminescence in semiconductors; Maxwell's equations; electrons in electromagnetic fields; interband transitions; radiative and non-radiative recombination; photoluminescence; and thermoluminescence. Students will also learn about the operating principles of optical devices such as LEDs and lasers. This fundamental knowledge will be applied in subsequent advanced courses such as semiconductor device technology, vacuum technology, and thin film fabrication.
