2. Brief description of the modules

This course provides students with a deep understanding of the fundamental nature of optical phenomena involving the interaction of lasers with matter. It delves into various nonlinear optical effects such as self-focusing, self-phase modulation, second harmonic generation, three-wave mixing, sum and difference frequency generation, parametric amplification and oscillation, four-wave mixing, third harmonic generation, optical bistability, photorefractive effect, and electro-optic effect. The course also explores the wide-ranging applications of nonlinear optics in technology and engineering, particularly in laser-based systems. This course builds upon the knowledge gained in the general physics course on electricity and magnetism and incorporates concepts from electrodynamics.
