- Brief course description:
Simulation techniques such as VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package) and Quantum ESPRESSO play a central role in semiconductor materials science, allowing these materials to be simulated at the atomic and electronic level. They are of the first importance because they let researchers and students explore and understand the fundamental properties and behaviour of semiconductor materials, clarifying the electronic structure, band-gap characteristics and basic quantum phenomena that determine their electrical properties. Using these simulation tools, students gain invaluable insight into the inner workings of semiconductors; that insight in turn allows semiconductor manufacturers to design and optimise devices such as transistors, solar cells and LEDs with greater precision.
