  1. Brief course description:

This course provides specialised knowledge of semiconductor materials and their applications. It covers band structure in semiconductors and their optical properties (absorption and emission processes). Optical methods used to study semiconductors are introduced, including transmission, reflection and photoluminescence. The photoelectric properties of several important semiconductors are examined, together with typical optoelectronic devices such as diodes, photodiodes and transistors. The course also familiarises students with forming and working in groups and with giving presentations, building a firm foundation in semiconductor materials and improving the presentation skills they will need for their thesis work.
