- Brief course description:
The course covers the structure, operating principles and applications of lighting devices from basic to advanced — LEDs, OLEDs, lasers, solar cells — and of optical sensing systems, optical communications, and optical signal detection, processing and amplification. Students are also introduced to “Green Photonics”: energy-efficient lighting technology that draws on renewable energy, reduces greenhouse-gas emissions and limits environmental pollution. In particular, students encounter laser cutting and engraving and ion-beam techniques, basic tools of the semiconductor industry. Ion-beam applications include surface cleaning, film deposition, impurity implantation, nanodevice bonding and integrated-circuit repair. The course belongs to the “Energy, storage and display engineering” strand of the semiconductor technology programme. Students experience active teaching methods, group discussion, and both group and individual work.
