2. Module objectives/intended learning outcomes
This course provides students with specialized knowledge of crystalline materials and crystal structures, covering the following topics: the fundamentals of crystal morphology; crystallographic point groups and space groups; crystallographic notation and crystal structures; crystal defects; crystal structure characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD); and the physical properties of crystals, with particular emphasis on the dependence of these properties on crystal symmetry and structure.
This foundational knowledge enables students to analyze the formation conditions and growth mechanisms of thin-film and bulk crystalline materials. Building on this knowledge, students will subsequently carry out experimental procedures to fabricate specific material products and perform preliminary assessments of their structural and material quality in subsequent courses.
