2. Module objectives/intended learning outcomes
This course serves as a key bridge in the Mechatronics–Robotics curriculum, helping students transition from basic mechanical design thinking to an integrated approach to the design, modeling, and control of complete mechatronic systems. It provides students with the knowledge and methodologies required to develop a complete mechatronic system and prepares them for the subsequent development of mathematical models of such systems.
The course covers the following topics:
Integrated mechatronic design thinking, encompassing mechanical, electrical, control, sensing, and actuation components;
Requirements analysis and system architecture development;
Design of mechanical transmission mechanisms, including linkages, cam–follower mechanisms, belt-and-gear drives, and actuators;
Selection of sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers;
An introduction to the relationship between mechatronic systems and their mathematical models, using the Newton–Euler and Lagrangian approaches.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to design a unit-level mechatronic system (mechatronic module), formulate its mathematical model using differential equations, and establish the necessary foundations for subsequent courses in control and system simulation.
