2. Module objectives/intended learning outcomes

The Semiconductor Physical Design course equips students with the core knowledge and practical skills required for the Physical Design (PD) stage of the VLSI design flow, including floorplanning, placement, clock tree synthesis (CTS), routing, timing closure, power integrity, and signoff.

The course emphasizes the industry-standard design flow from RTL to GDSII, integrating theoretical foundations, electronic design automation (EDA) tools, and practical optimization problems. It also introduces emerging applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in Physical Design, including placement optimization, routing congestion prediction, and timing optimization.

The course provides an essential foundation for advanced courses in IC Design, intelligent EDA, and AI for semiconductor technologies, and prepares students for careers as IC Design Engineers or Physical Design Engineers in the semiconductor industry.
