Program overview bachelor of Nuclear engineering

1. Introduction

In the context of rapid scientific and technological advancement and growing societal needs, nuclear engineering has emerged as a cutting-edge applied science rather than a distant field. It plays a vital role in numerous key areas such as healthcare, energy, industry, agriculture, and environmental protection.
In response to these trends, the Bachelor of Nuclear Engineering program at the University of Science, VNU-HCM is designed to train a highly qualified workforce equipped with strong professional knowledge, proficient practical skills, and professional ethics
-ready to meet the human resource demands of Vietnam’s industrialization and modernization.

The program not only provides a solid foundation in nuclear physics but also emphasizes practical applications, preparing students to become engineers and scientists capable of mastering technology, conducting research, innovating, and addressing real-world societal challenges.

2. Program objectives

The program aims to develop graduates with strong political and ethical qualities, good health, and the following core competencies:

- Knowledge: Master fundamental knowledge in natural sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry), economics, social sciences, and political ideology to build scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. Acquire comprehensive, in-depth, and up-to-date knowledge in nuclear engineering, including reactor physics, radiation safety, nuclear measurement and analysis, and applications in industry and energy. Be able to analyze, evaluate, and solve complex nuclear engineering problems and propose effective technical solutions.

- Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in experimentation, design, fabrication, operation, and assessment of systems related to nuclear engineering. Possess critical thinking, creativity, and independent research capabilities. Communicate effectively, collaborate and lead teams, and adapt flexibly to diverse working environments. Be fluent in English and competent in information technology for learning, research, and career development.

- Attitudes and Responsibility: Foster professional ethics and integrity, respect differences, and maintain a strong sense of community service. Develop a lifelong learning mindset and continuously update knowledge and professional competence. Recognize the societal responsibilities and significant impact of nuclear engineering on safety and sustainable development.

3. Specializations (advanced focus areas)

A distinctive feature of the program is that from the third year, students can choose one of the two specialized tracks based on their interests and career goals:

a. Nuclear Engineering

This track has broad applications and focuses on the use of nuclear techniques in various sectors.

Core topics: Nuclear structure and reactions, radiation detection and analysis, radiation technology, and applications in agriculture (mutation breeding, food preservation), industry (non-destructive testing, measurement), and the environment (waste treatment, isotope tracing).

Sample courses: nuclear techniques in agriculture, medicine, and biology; nuclear analytical techniques; radiation technology; principles and applications of accelerators.

b. Nuclear Power and Energy Engineering

This track offers in-depth training in nuclear energy production, addressing the future human resource needs of the nuclear power industry.

Core topics: Reactor physics and technology, reactor thermal-hydraulics and safety, fuel cycle, operation simulation, and radioactive waste management.

Sample courses: reactor physics, reactor thermal-hydraulics, nuclear safety, nuclear power plant operation simulation, fuel cycle and radiochemistry.

4. Expected learning outcomes

Upon graduation, Bachelor of Nuclear Engineering students will achieve comprehensive capabilities, including:

- Application of knowledge: Ability to apply mathematics, basic sciences, and core nuclear engineering knowledge to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems in nuclear engineering and related fields.
