1. General introduction
The Department of Applied Physics is one of the very early and long-standing departments of the Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics, a department established in the early years when the School and Faculty were established in the years before 1975. With the original name of the Department of Spectroscopy, the department is the origin of many strong research groups in the Southern region on Optics, Spectroscopy, Photonics, Thin Films, Nanomaterials and Materials. new material.
The subject room is located from room A04 to A07, block A, University of Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Van Cu campus. Along with a team of experienced staff including 02 Associate Professors, 06 Doctors and 04 Masters. Currently, the Head of the Department of Applied Physics is Associate Professor, PhD. Le Vu Tuan Hung, Deputy Head of Department is Ms. Associate Professor, PhD. Vu Thi Hanh Thu, subject teacher is Master. Hoang Luong Cuong and the teaching staff are experienced and dedicated teachers.
Through the process of training and development, the Department of Applied Physics is a solid training ground for students and trainees to achieve solid professional qualifications, proficient experimental skills, and research ability. and lifelong discovery, have a creative thinking capacity along with the smooth development of soft skills, ensuring output for students that matches the recruitment needs of the market, the company, domestic and foreign organizations,... Not only that, the Department of Applied Physics is a source of practical contributions, developing and providing high-quality intellectual talent to serve the cause of industrialization and modernity. culture of the country.
2. Main research directions of the department
To meet the country's development needs, provide a labor source with highly creative knowledge in the direction of applying Physics knowledge from basic to in-depth into socio-economic development. The Department of Applied Physics trains many research directions related to materials, electromagnetism, energy, nanotechnology,... of which the most notable are the two main research directions of the department. as follows:
- Optics - Spectroscopy - Laser
The Department of Applied Physics is a gathering place for many leading experts to teach and research on Optics - Spectroscopy - Lasers with many modern equipment, so the goal of the department is to train create a generation of knowledge with full knowledge and skills about Optics - Photonics, meeting the needs of promoting and developing the country's economy.

-
Nanostructured materials
One of the strengths of the current research of the Applied Physics department is nanostructured materials or combinations of materials, especially:
- Nano thin films are made from semiconductor oxide materials such as SnO2, ZnO, TiO2 used in Optical - Optoelectronic devices such as thin film solar cells, optical sensing devices, electronic components .
- Research and synthesize surface-modified quantum dot materials to bind antibodies and proteins for applications in medicine and biomedicine such as detecting cancer cells and detecting bacterial species.
- Combination of nanostructured materials with many different shapes such as nanorods, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanowires of semiconductor oxide materials combined with metal nanoparticles to apply into SERS substrates to detect Detect traces of toxic organic substances, thereby aiming to successfully manufacture a SERS sensor that can be used to identify toxic chemicals in vegetables, fruits, and meat. This is currently the strong research direction of the department in the State's "Physics Development Program", so it receives great attention and attention from the department.
In addition, the department also researches and manufactures new materials at the nano level with many different shapes towards applications in environmental analysis and energy conversion.

3. About learning and employment opportunities
After students graduate from the training program of the Faculty of Physics - Technical Physics with a major in Applied Physics, students can continue to study at the graduate level in the Department of Applied Physics or can apply for Recruitment to companies, organizations, and corporations related to the field of Applied Physics.
Postgraduate study opportunities: The Department of Applied Physics offers two Master's programs and one Doctoral program:
- Master of Optics
- Master in Radio and Electronics - Applied Physics direction
- Doctor of Optics
In addition, students can also choose to study a double Master's degree program in Applied Physics, with one year of study at the Applied Physics department, Ho Chi Minh University of Natural Sciences and then 1 year of study at a school or university affiliated with a department such as Chi-Nan University (Taiwan) or National Taiwan University.
