Workshop: Current status and solutions in human resource training and research and implementation in the field of Semiconductor Circuits in Vietnam with a vision to 2045

Recently, the University of Sciences, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City Semiconductor Association (HSIA) and Synopsys Vietnam Company organized a seminar "Current status and solutions in human resource training and research and implementation in the field of Semiconductor Circuits in Vietnam with a vision to 2045". The special seminar received attention from businesses, professors in the industry as well as from students.

According to MSc. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Chairman of the Vietnam Semiconductor Circuit Association, the number of businesses in the field of semiconductor circuits is quite large, human resources are concentrated mainly in Ho Chi Minh City. The total number of semiconductor IC engineers is estimated to be nearly 9,000. The number of annual job postings at companies in this field is about 400, forecast to increase to more than 500 from 2022. Recently, President Joe Biden had visit in Vietnam, Accordingly, Vietnam and the United States announced the launch of human resource development initiatives in the semiconductor field, in which the US Government will provide an initial seeding grant worth 2 million dollars. This is a sign of the development potential of the semiconductor technology field in Vietnam in the coming years.

According to Professor. Dr. Dang Luong Mo - Honorary Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Semiconductor Circuit Technology Association, he is a pioneer in semiconductor IC education and training in Vietnam since 1971, the first person to connect with foreign experts. In addition to research and development cooperation, he is the founder of the Ho Chi Minh City Semiconductor Association. According to Teacher Mo: "This is a good time for people and people to be able to open the era of "semiconductor microchips" in Vietnam."

On the side of the University of Sciences, Vietnam National University-HCM, Associate Professor, PhD. Vu Thi Hanh Thu, lecturer in the Department of Physics - Technical Physics, introduced the research groups as well as the equipment and facilities for research and training. According to Ms. Thu: "With more than 20 years of experience in research and teaching in the field of semiconductor technology, the Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics is completely confident in training high-quality human resources and developing Research directions for the semiconductor chip industry in Vietnam are consistent with the Government's digital transformation orientation." In addition, she also informed about the Faculty's development plan in the coming years, including 3 main contents:

  • Develop a training program for the Semiconductor Technology industry for the new school year
  • Construction of Semiconductor and Nano Photonic Technology Laboratory
  • Strengthen cooperation and attract highly qualified human resources graduated from abroad with the right expertise for training and research activities in the field of semiconductor technology.

Besides the human resources training unit, on the business side, Mr. Nguyen Phuc Vinh, representative of Synopsys Company presented training programs from the company such as: providing free software with full enough features for the training process of future engineers; connecting good students to participate in real projects; Synopsys also pays great attention to research for sustainable development. The company also has training programs such as: talent training, most of you pass world-class exams and receive offers from companies before graduating; Engineer training program to work in Taiwan with high salaries; 6-week training program for trainers. Mr. Vinh also emphasized the lack of human resources for the semiconductor chip technology industry in the future.

In addition, at the seminar, the University of Sciences, VNU-HCM also signed a memorandum of cooperation with two units, the Institute of Nanotechnology, VNU-HCM and Synopsys Vietnam Company.
