Physics is a key field of major at the Faculty of Physics, and students can choose between two main directions during the specialized stage: direction 1 - Physics and direction 2 - Technical Physics. This article will focus on the research directions within Direction 2 - Engineering Physics.

In the Physics and Informatics program, students will gain knowledge in various fields such as physics, electronics, and computer science. The program covers basic science, physics, electronics, software, computer algorithms, and their application in designing electronic systems and developing application software and computational science on computers. The main training directions include:

  • Applied Electronics: This involves learning about measurement circuits, testing semiconductor materials, developing applications for embedded systems and internet of things (IoT) systems, as well as interdisciplinary measurement and control applications such as robotics, automation, and biomedical engineering. It also includes application equipment for fields like Chemistry, Biology, and high-tech agriculture.
  • Computer and Computational Science: This area covers modeling and simulation, application software, app and web development for measurement and control systems, and calculating parameters of physical objects and materials. It also includes computer algorithms for neural networks and machine learning for interdisciplinary subjects.

In the Solid State Physics course, students will explore various research directions with scientific and practical significance. Three main research areas to focus on include:

  • New material creation methods: This involves the creation of nanomaterials, 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D semiconductors using techniques such as PVD, CVD, and chemical methods.
  • The aim is to produce component products like LEDs, OLEDs, MOSFETs, solar cells, and instrument sensors.
  • Automation in sample creation and measurement: The department has significantly contributed to the development and enhancement of machinery systems for sample manufacturing, measuring equipment, and result analysis. This has led to improved research and training quality. For instance, the department has pioneered the creation of 2D materials like graphene and phosphorene, as well as the development of sensitive gas and VOC measurement methods at the University of Sciences, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City.

Applied Physics direction: when studying in this direction, students will cultivate knowledge in many different fields such as spectroscopy, thin films, nanomaterials, and new materials. Main research directions include:

- Technology for manufacturing transparent conductive electrode photonic materials, n-type and p-type semiconductor membranes, and high absorption membranes for high-performance solar cells such as CZTS and Cu2O.

- Technology for manufacturing strongly luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (CdS, CdSe) with different structures (bare core, core/shell, core/shell/functional materials), 1D photonic crystal materials, and 2D and 3D materials that can change the optical band gap. Nanostructured materials have special properties and can be produced using chemical methods.

- Fabrication of materials used as the active medium in laser devices, with the aim of manufacturing lasers based on these materials.

- Research and manufacture materials with grapheme structure: MoS2, MoSe2,... for application in solar cells, photocatalysis,...

- Research and development (R&D) of technology for manufacturing photonic components and devices for application in optical information and optical sensors.

- Research and application of nanometer-sized photonic materials in fluorescent marking, biological marking, self-cleaning and disinfection, luminescent components and photo-electric conversion, high-performance solar cells.

- Research and manufacture SERS sensors (Surface plasmon resonance effect Raman signal enhancement) to detect chemical traces of pesticides in fruits and vegetables.

Research and develop nonlinear optical materials (NLO) like KDP (KH2PO4) crystals and organic pigment polymer films for use in laser optical systems including laser frequency multipliers, electro-optical modulators, and optical limiting films. Investigate the second-order nonlinear optical coefficients, third-order nonlinear optical parameters, and two-photon absorption in photodynamic effects of crystalline materials, organic substances, and pigments.

Electronic Physics is an interdisciplinary science that provides basic knowledge of physics and advanced knowledge in electronic engineering. This training program is highly applicable and suitable for the current human resource needs in the fields of electronic engineering technology and information technology. Students will gain knowledge in digital and analog electronics, measuring devices, sensors, microcontrollers, signal processing, microchip design, embedded system design, as well as developing applications based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology and artificial intelligence (AI) for use in high-tech agriculture, health monitoring support, energy management and monitoring, and more. The program focuses on both theory and practice, and students have the opportunity to do internships at laboratories and companies in electronics, microchip design, automatic control, embedded systems, and IoT.

Upon completion of the program, students will have a wide range of job opportunities, including working in foreign companies such as Intel, Bosch, Samsung, FPT, Viettel, VNPT, Mitsuba, Ryomo, Renesas, Sony, Olympus, On Semiconductor, Ascenx Technologies, and Bureau Veritas. They can also pursue careers in teaching at universities and colleges nationwide, working and conducting research in laboratories of universities and research institutes, and working in companies in the fields of nanotechnology, thin films, optical spectroscopy, material science centers, and analysis centers. Additionally, they can work at the Department of Science & Technology, hospitals, medical facilities, companies, export processing zones, nuclear power plants, and agencies related to the field of nuclear physics.

Students can also continue their postgraduate studies in developed countries as well as domestically under the scholarship program of the National University and international scholarship programs.
