On the morning of February 4, 2026, the Dept. Geophysics, Faculty of Physics & Engineering Physics, organized an academic seminar to exchange and discuss the practical applications of geophysics in society and sustainable development. The event attracted the participation of faculty members, researchers, and students from within and beyond the Faculty, featuring two scientific presentations.
Session 1: “Applications of Geophysics in Underground Infrastructure Mapping, Construction, and Geological Structure Studies”
Presenter: Associate Professor Lê Văn Anh Cường, Head of the Dept. of Geophysics
The presentation outlined the Division’s key research directions and applications in the analysis, processing, and interpretation of 2D/3D geophysical data. Representative studies included marine geological surveys in the Can Gio area; identification of the locations and characteristics of civil underground structures in Ho Chi Minh City; and investigations of deep geological structures, notably the Moho discontinuity at the Olympic Dam mineral deposit (Australia).
The report also emphasized the integration of advanced mathematical methods, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data processing technologies for the joint analysis of multi-source datasets such as seismic data, direct current (DC) electrical methods, and high- and low-frequency electromagnetic techniques (ground-penetrating radar – GPR, and magnetotellurics – MT). This integrated approach enhances the accuracy of geological structure modeling and effectively supports engineering and construction applications.
Session 2: “Global Disaster Relief Support”
Presenter: Professor Wen-Yen Chang, Vice President of National Dong Hwa University (Taiwan)
This presentation introduced research achievements and scientific–technological applications in reducing risks and damages caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, landslides, and tsunamis. A key focus was the real-time disaster early warning system widely and systematically implemented in Taiwan, enabling rapid information dissemination to communities and significantly mitigating losses of life and property.
In addition, networks of fixed seismic monitoring stations installed in many countries - particularly across Southeast Asia - have effectively supported earthquake data analysis and tsunami hazard assessment, making important contributions to disaster prevention and mitigation at regional and global scales.
