On the morning of December 13, 2024, Dr. Klaus Schwarzer from Kiel University, Germany presented a study on the development of the Saigon - Dong Nai River Delta and the Mekong Delta.
Dr. Klaus Schwarzer presented studies on the evolution of deltas in the world in general and the two deltas of the Saigon - Dong Nai River Delta and the Mekong Delta in a systematic manner. The report summarizes some of the main issues from natural impacts and human activities that cause an imbalance in the amount of sediment transported to the delta and coastal areas. Notably, the subsidence of the delta and coastal strip due to overexploitation of resources, especially groundwater exploitation. This problem leads to increased flooding and loss of coastal strips faster than the impact of climate change and sea level rise due to climate change.
The seminar also reviewed the results of the authors' recent research on the development of the coastal areas of the two river basins. This is the result of a 20-year research collaboration between the University of Kiel and the University of Science (VNU-HCM) in which the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology and Hydrology co-chaired one of the research topics.
