Abstract:
Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED), are revolutionizing the design and fabrication of components. These technologies offer unprecedented freedom in part geometry, enabling the production of metallic components that were previously impossible to manufacture. However, several challenges still hinder AM from fully replacing conventional manufacturing methods such as casting or forging. Among these, achieving complete control over the process–structure–property relationship and improving process scalability are two of the most significant hurdles. This presentation provides a brief introduction to the fundamentals of powder-bed-based AM methods. It will highlight key challenges, review current solutions, and present recent industry efforts aimed at enhancing the scalability of these processes.
