From September 7 to 11, 2026, the University of Science, VNU-HCM successfully hosted the IEEE NPSS School on Nuclear Power for Sustainable Development, an intensive academic program focusing on nuclear power, with the participation of experts, researchers, faculty members, and students working and studying in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear power, and medical physics.
The program focused on providing participants with updated knowledge and facilitating in-depth academic discussions on nuclear energy development strategies, advanced nuclear power technologies, and the role of nuclear power in energy security, carbon emission reduction, and sustainable development. The academic content covered a broad range of topics, from fundamental reactor technologies to emerging developments, including different generations of nuclear reactors, small modular reactors (SMRs), microreactors, fusion technology, nuclear safety, and nuclear security.
Integrating Academic Knowledge with Simulation-Based Training
A key component of the program was hands-on training and technical scenario analysis using the nuclear simulation toolkit developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Through practical exercises and simulated scenarios, participants had the opportunity to apply their specialized knowledge and explore technical issues related to nuclear power technologies and systems in practical contexts.
The integration of foundational knowledge, specialized lectures, and simulation-based training provided participants with opportunities to strengthen their analytical skills and deepen their understanding of nuclear science and technology and its applications.
Strengthening Academic and International Collaboration
Beyond the academic training activities, the IEEE NPSS School provided opportunities for faculty members, researchers, and students to engage directly with experts in the field, exchange perspectives on emerging research directions, and expand their academic networks.
The program also contributed to strengthening education and research collaboration between the University of Science, VNU-HCM, the IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society (IEEE NPSS), the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM), and other domestic and international partners.
As part of the program, a field visit to Can Tho City on September 10, 2026 was organized, providing participants with an opportunity to broaden their learning experience and connect academic knowledge with practical contexts beyond the classroom.
Contributing to Human Resource Development in Nuclear Power
Through its combination of specialized academic training, simulation-based learning, and academic networking, the IEEE NPSS School on Nuclear Power for Sustainable Development contributed to strengthening professional capacity in the nuclear field while fostering connections among education, research, and international collaboration.
The program represents one of the University's ongoing efforts to promote knowledge exchange, research capacity building, and academic collaboration in nuclear power and nuclear technology, contributing to the development of human resources capable of addressing emerging requirements in nuclear safety, energy security, and sustainable development.
