From the quantum world to advanced measurement technologies

From 8 to 10 September 2026, the Faculty of Physics & Engineering Physics, University of Science, VNU-HCM, organized the specialized lecture series “Quantum Optics and Superconductivity,” featuring Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hiền, Lecturer at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), USA. The program provided students and graduate learners with an opportunity to explore fundamental concepts in quantum physics and gain insight into how quantum phenomena are harnessed in advanced research systems and precision measurement technologies.

Connecting Quantum Foundations with Contemporary Research

Quantum optics and superconductivity are among the key areas of modern physics, providing fundamental principles for a wide range of advanced applications in precision measurement, sensing, and fundamental research.

During the lecture series, Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hiền delivered three specialized sessions covering the quantization of the electromagnetic field and coherent states; beam splitters, interferometers, and non-classical light; and superconductivity and the Josephson effect.

Through these sessions, participants developed a deeper understanding of fundamental concepts in quantum optics, from the quantum nature of electromagnetic fields and light to characteristic phenomena associated with superconducting systems. Beyond theoretical foundations, the program emphasized the connection between fundamental physical phenomena and their applications in contemporary experimental systems.

A particularly notable aspect of the program was the discussion of the role of quantum phenomena in precision measurement technologies, including interferometric systems such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). This provided participants with a broader perspective on how fundamental physical principles can be harnessed to develop highly sensitive measurement systems for frontier scientific research.

Expanding Academic Exchange and International Research Connections

Beyond specialized knowledge, the lecture series created opportunities for students and graduate learners to engage directly with a researcher involved in teaching and scientific research at leading institutions in the United States.

Discussions on specialized knowledge, research approaches, and contemporary scientific practice enabled participants to connect the theoretical foundations acquired through their studies with current research directions worldwide. The program also offered an opportunity to explore research areas including quantum physics, optics, superconductivity, precision measurement, and emerging technologies.

Academic programs featuring international researchers contribute to an open and dynamic learning environment at the Faculty of Physics & Engineering Physics, while strengthening the connection between education, scientific research, and international academic networks.
