Reading and critically evaluating scientific literature is an essential skill for undergraduate and graduate students as well as early-career researchers. However, identifying key claims, evaluating evidence, analyzing scientific reasoning, and understanding the implications of research findings can often be challenging.
To support the development of systematic scientific reading and analytical skills, the USAC Workshop will feature a session entitled “Enhancing Scientific Reading Skills with the CERIC Method.”
The workshop will introduce and provide hands-on practice with CERIC, a systematic framework for reading and analyzing scientific literature based on five core elements: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, Implications, Context
Through this framework, participants will learn how to approach scientific papers systematically, from identifying key research questions and claims to examining evidence, evaluating reasoning, and considering the broader implications of research findings within their appropriate context.

Prof. Adam Burgasser - Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of California San Diego (UC San Diego), USA.
Dr. Genevive Bjorn - Doctor of Education, Johns Hopkins University; Founding Director of Higher Learning Lab, USA.
Both speakers are co-authors of How to Critically Read the Scientific Research Literature, a book that presents systematic approaches to reading, analyzing, and evaluating scientific research literature.
Workshop Highlights
The workshop is designed to provide participants with practical skills that can be directly applied to their academic and research activities, including:
- Reading and analyzing scientific papers systematically;
- Identifying key claims, evidence, and scientific reasoning;
- Strengthening literature search, synthesis, and Literature Review skills;
- Developing critical thinking and academic communication skills;
- Applying the CERIC framework through hands-on analysis of scientific literature.
